Arm's Length
Arm’s length. Not too far away. Not too close. I remember when I first realized that I preferred God at arm’s length. Not too far away. Not too close.
It’s an old line of mine. An honest reflection from another season. Oddly true still today. What is it about the living God that is both irresistibly attractive and unpredictably threatening?

Peter knew all about this, didn't he? He loved Jesus so much, yet said, "Get away from me, Lord, I'm a sinner!" And somehow Jesus liked the raw enthusiasm of Peter. The "keys," after all, were given to Peter, and not one of the more tempered disciples. It seems God can use a wrestler - someone who loves deeply, but also strugles honestly - someone who knows God's presense is wonderful, but also dreadful.
